5 Painters brings together five intergenerational Auckland-based artists, each offering a distinct visual language that reflects their personal histories, cultural narratives, and artistic methodologies. This exhibition explores the dynamic interplay of color, form, and memory through the diverse practices of these painters.

Roy Good employs a precise and structured approach, using sleek, geometric compositions that balance color and space with intentional precision. In contrast, Gavin Jones embraces expressive mark-making, allowing intuition and gesture to drive his process. Rhea Maheshwari’s paintings transport viewers into intricate Indian dreamscapes, where tradition and contemporary sensibilities merge. Louie Bretaña reinterprets Filipino celestial deities, adorning them with glitter and glass crystals, creating a shimmering dialogue between mythology and modernity. Meanwhile, Llenyd Price layers landscapes through a fusion of drawings, photographs, and recollections, distorting and reshaping place through a deeply personal lens.

Together, these five artists form a compelling conversation about identity, transformation, and perception. Their work captures the fluidity of artistic expression and the evolving nature of painting itself. 5 Painters is an invitation to experience how time, place, and lived experience shape the creative process, offering a multifaceted perspective on contemporary painting in Aotearoa.
