In Icon 2, Ian George reflects on the presence of Cook Islands cultural artefacts held in overseas institutions, specifically those housed at the Hunterian University Museum in Glasgow. Through this work, George repositions these displaced taonga within a contemporary framework, asserting their relevance to present-day Cook Islands society. By locating and visually referencing these objects, George critiques colonial collecting practices while using the artefacts as conceptual anchors for cultural renewal in addition to asking Cook Islanders to revalue their pre-colonial past. Icon 2 is not only a call for recognition, but a proposition: that reconnecting with these historical objects can inform and strengthen the evolving values, identity, and self-understanding of modern Cook Islanders.
