Sēmisi Fetokai Potauaine Tonga | New Zealand

Sēmisi Fetokai Potauaine is a Tongan-born artist and architect, now residing in Aotearoa New Zealand, whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses architecture, sculpture, tattooing, painting, weaving, and computer graphic design. Grounded in traditional Tongan artistic and literary concepts, his work reflects a sophisticated synthesis of cultural heritage and contemporary expression.

Educated in Tonga and furthering his studies in New Zealand and abroad, Potauaine holds a Master of Architecture from The University of Auckland. His research and creative endeavours focus on the interplay of time and space (ta–va), culture and language, theory and practice, and art and literature. This theoretical foundation informs his diverse body of work, which often explores themes of identity, spirituality, and the convergence of tradition and modernity.

One of his notable works, "VAKA 'A HINA," is a 16-meter-tall steel sculpture installed in Christchurch's Rauora Park in 2019. Commissioned by SCAPE Public Art, this striking piece symbolises solidarity and togetherness, transcending cultural and spiritual boundaries, serving as a lasting legacy of hope.

In 2017, Potauaine's "MANUĒSINA (White Bird/White Angel)" was featured in the Sculpture on the Gulf exhibition on Waiheke Island. This work reflects his deep engagement with Tongan cultural motifs and his ability to translate traditional forms into contemporary contexts.

Earlier, in 2012, he was commissioned by the Tongan Ministry of Tourism to create "Tunavakamea & Hinavakamea," two eight-meter-high steel sculptures for the waterfront of Nuku'alofa, Tonga's capital. These works highlight his commitment to enriching public spaces with art that resonates with cultural significance.

Potauaine's contributions to art and architecture have been recognised through various accolades, including the Commonwealth International Connections Art Residency in 2009, during which he produced works ranging from graphic art to sculptures at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

Through his multifaceted practice, Sēmisi Fetokai Potauaine continues to bridge the gap between traditional Pacific art forms and contemporary artistic expression, offering insightful reflections on cultural identity and the evolving nature of art in public spaces.
