Lucas Grogan Australia, b. 1984

Lucas Grogan, born in 1984 in Cooma, New South Wales, is an Australian artist renowned for his distinctive blue-and-white artworks that span painting, textiles, and murals. Raised in Maitland, he later studied art at Newcastle University before establishing himself in Melbourne. Grogan's work is characterized by intricate patterns, geometric designs, and the incorporation of text, often infused with acerbic wit and social commentary.

His artistic journey began with exhibitions in 2005, and by 2008, he gained significant attention when featured in the Biennale of Sydney at the age of 24. Grogan's  renowned Library series serves as time capsules, encapsulating competing ideologies, psychological insights, and reflections on current affairs. His inspirations are diverse, drawing from Islamic motifs, traditional Aboriginal paintings, and contemporary culture. He often employs sarcastic quotes, both famous and colloquial, painted freehand, adding layers of meaning to his pieces.

Throughout his career, Grogan has participated in numerous residencies and completed major mural commissions in locations such as Bali, Newcastle, Melbourne, and Perth. In 2013, he was awarded the Red Gate residency in Beijing, further expanding his international presence. His works have been exhibited extensively across Australia and internationally, including cities like Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Auckland, Rarotonga, and London.

In 2020, the Maitland Regional Art Gallery hosted a retrospective of his work, bringing his artistic journey full circle to his hometown. Grogan's creations are held in numerous private and public collections, notably the National Gallery of Australia, Newcastle Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Ballarat, Wesfarmers, Deutsche Bank, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, and Ararat Gallery.

Grogan's unique blend of traditional patterns with contemporary themes, coupled with his signature blue palette and sharp humor, has solidified his place in the contemporary art scene, both in Australia and internationally.
